Speech Pathology for Kids

Speech

Language

Language

Speech is how children use sounds to make words so they can be understood. Some kids may have difficulty with certain sounds (articulation) or use patterns that make their speech harder to understand (phonological patterns). A Speech Pathologist can help children practise accurate sounds, improve their clarity, and build confidence so they can be understood by family, friends, and others.

Language

Language is how children understand and use words to share their ideas. Some children may find it hard to understand instructions (receptive language), while others may have trouble putting words together to express themselves (expressive language). A Speech Pathologist can support children to grow their vocabulary, build longer sentences, answer and ask questions, and better understand what others are saying. This helps them succeed at home, school, and with friends.

Literacy

Social Communication

Literacy involves the ability to read, write, and understand written language. Speech Pathologists can assess both children to identify any challenges with reading, writing, or comprehension, and develop targeted interventions to support skill development, improve understanding, and enhance overall literacy abilities. Our clinicians are Sounds Write certified.

Social Communication

Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC)

Social Communication

Social communication is how children use language to build friendships, take turns, share ideas, and understand others. Some children may find it tricky to pick up on social cues, join in play, or manage conversations. A Speech Pathologist can support children to develop these skills in fun and practical ways, helping them feel more confident connecting with family, friends, and teachers.

Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC)

AAC is any way of communicating other than talking. For children, this might include using pictures, key word signs, communication books, or speech-generating devices. A Speech Pathologist can help find the AAC system that best supports your child’s needs. Therapy is then focused on helping your child and the people around them learn to use AAC so they can share their ideas, needs, and feelings in everyday life.
