What Can I Expect?

Starting your speech pathology journey can feel overwhelming, but we aim to make the process as smooth and transparent as possible. Below is an outline of what to expect when booking an appointment and beginning services with us.

2. Initial Assessment

Making initial contact is simple and stress-free with Tell Me More Speech Pathology. Visit our Contact Us page to get started.

When you reach out, we will take the time to understand your needs, gather some basic information, and discuss your availability for scheduling. This allows us to determine the best next steps and ensure a smooth and personalised start to your speech pathology journey.

If you're unsure whether speech therapy is right for you or your loved one, we’re happy to answer any questions and guide you through the process.

2. Initial Assessment

Duration: 60-90 minutes, depending on the reason for referral.

Your first session typically includes:

  • Case history interview with the client and/or family to gather background information.
  • Collection of additional details related to medical history, communication, mealtimes, strengths, and areas of concern.
  • Possible commencement of formal assessments, depending on session time and client needs.

If additional assessments are needed, these will be scheduled accordingly, and we’ll discuss the process to ensure full transparency.

3. Speech Pathology Report

Following the assessment, we often provide an Initial Speech Pathology Report, which:

  • Summarises assessment results
  • Outlines therapy goals based on findings and client concerns
  • Provides initial therapy recommendations

These reports are valuable for:

  • NDIS participants who may need them for planning meetings and funding justifications.
  • Private clients who may use them for medical appointments, specialist referrals, or ongoing support.
  • Tracking progress, as they provide a baseline for measuring therapy outcomes over time.

4. Therapy Sessions

5. Home Practice & Additional Supports

3. Speech Pathology Report

Standard therapy sessions are scheduled for 60 minutes, which includes:

  • 50 minutes of direct therapy with the client.
  • 10 minutes allocated for preparation, documentation, and clinical notes to ensure thorough session planning and follow-up.

Session length can be adjusted on a case-by-case basis depending on individual needs, therapy goals, and funding arrangements. This will be discussed and agreed upon prior to commencing services.

Therapy sessions are typically scheduled weekly, fortnightly, or monthly, depending on the client’s needs and preferences. The treating clinician will recommend an appropriate frequency based on assessment results, therapy goals, evidence-based interventions, client preferences and so on.

Speech therapy is a dynamic process that evolves as clients progress. Sessions may be adjusted over time to reflect progress, newly identified goals, changing needs, and individual circumstances.

5. Home Practice & Additional Supports

To maximise progress, we provide strategies and activities for home practice. Therapy is most effective when skills are reinforced in everyday situations, and we encourage clients, families, and caregivers to incorporate these techniques between sessions.

For children and individuals in school, daycare, or disability support settings, we can also provide guidance to teachers, educators, and support staff to help implement therapy strategies in their daily routines. This may include:

  • Sharing key therapy goals with educators or support staff.
  • Providing simple, practical strategies that can be used in the classroom or daycare setting.
  • Offering consultation sessions or written recommendations to ensure a consistent approach across home and school/daycare environments.

If additional support for educators, caregivers, or other professionals is required, please reach out to discuss how we can work together to support communication and mealtime goals across different settings.

Flexibility to Meet Your Needs

We understand that therapy is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Every client has unique needs, routines, and preferences, and we are committed to making therapy as flexible and accessible as possible.
